How Many Tables for 50, 75, 100, or 150 Guests?
How many tables you need by guest count: quick answers for 50, 75, 100, and 150 guests, rounds vs rectangular math, and the comfort-capacity formula planners actually use.
Table count is guest count divided by seats-per-table — then adjusted for comfort, a head table, and the fact that one table is always awkward. Get the arithmetic right before you fall in love with a centerpiece.
Below are quick answers for 50, 75, 100, and 150 guests, plus the formula for any other number. Per-diameter capacity lives in how many people can sit at a round table.
The formula (and the fudge factor)
Tables needed ≈ confirmed guests ÷ seats per table, rounded up. Then add: (1) a head or sweetheart table if those seats are not in the rounds, (2) one buffer table if more than ~10% of invitations are still outstanding. Packing every chair on day one is how last-minute yeses become standing guests.
Comfort seats, not max seats: plan 60-inch rounds at 8, not 10; 72-inch at 10, not 12. Max capacity is for overflow night, not the plan you print.
Quick reference by guest count
| Guests | Rounds of 8 | Rounds of 10 | 8-ft banquet (~10) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 7 | 5 | 5 |
| 75 | 10 | 8 | 8 |
| 100 | 13 | 10 | 10–11 |
| 150 | 19 | 15 | 15–16 |
Worked examples: 50–75 guests, 100 guests, 150 guests.
How many tables for 100 guests (the most-asked case)
Most 100-guest receptions land on 10 rounds of 10 or 13 rounds of 8 (104 seats). Twelve rounds of 8 (96 seats) only work if at least four of the 100 guests sit at a separate head table — a two-seat sweetheart alone leaves you two short. Rounds of 8 feel more generous and leave room for place settings; rounds of 10 save floor space and rental cost. Rectangular alternative: about ten to twelve 8-foot tables if ends are seated.
Table count means nothing if the room cannot fit them
Budget ~10–12 square feet per guest for rounds with dance floor, more for longs with wide aisles. Always confirm with a scaled floor plan — venue "max capacity" assumes a different layout than a plated wedding dinner. Layout walkthrough: wedding reception table layout.
