Classroom seating chart maker
Classroom seating chart template you can edit and print
Start from desks in rows, pods, a U-shape, or a horseshoe, add your roster, print the chart. Tags, seating rules, and a shuffle that respects them — built for teachers who'd rather teach.
A classroom seating chart assigns each student to a specific desk. SeatPlan.io is a classroom seating chart maker with desk layouts in rows, pods, U-shape, or horseshoe, roster import from a CSV, tags and seating rules for who sits where, and printable PDFs you can leave in the sub folder. Designing is free; the Classroom plan saves every class you teach for one price per school year.
Editable classroom seating chart template
Open Classroom in the designer and the classroom seating chart generator places every desk for you. Then each one is yours to edit.
Rows with an aisle
Set the number of rows and columns, and keep a centre aisle down the middle or close it up.
Groups and pods
Cluster desks in pods of 4 or 6 for group work, and choose how many pods the room holds.
U-shape or horseshoe
Line desks along three sides, or around an open curve, so every student faces in for discussion.
Front of the room and your desk
Mark the front of the room, then add a single desk for yourself and rename it.
Add, move, or remove desks
Choose one or two seats per desk, drag any desk to where it really sits, and delete the ones you don't have.
Then add your roster
Paste names from your gradebook or upload a CSV, then drag students onto desks or shuffle the class.

Prefer paper? The blank template has 30 desks in rows with a centre aisle, a front-of-room marker, an empty name box on every desk, and lines for teacher, class period, room, and date. It prints on US Letter in landscape and is free to download, no signup.
Designing is free with no signup. Saving a class and printing a chart with names need the Classroom plan.
Three steps. That's it.
Built for teachers with five classes and no prep period to spare.
1. Lay out the room
Pick a desk layout — rows with an aisle, pods of 4 or 6, U-shape, or horseshoe — and the front of the room is marked for you. Mix in round group tables or chair rows to match your real classroom.
2. Add your students
Paste names from your gradebook or upload a CSV. A tags column (reading group, glasses, ELL) comes in with the names. No student email addresses needed.
3. Print and post
Export a clean PDF for the sub folder, one chart per class period, or name cards for the first day. Names only — tags and notes stay in the app.
Built for classrooms
The features that matter for a school year — not a generic toolkit.
Every period, one tool
Save a different chart for every class period or section. Reuse the same room layout as a template across all of them, and restore an earlier version when a seating change doesn't work out.
Tags, rules, and shuffle
Tag students, set seating rules — keep these two apart, keep these together — then shuffle. The shuffle reseats the class while respecting your rules, so a fresh chart takes one click, not a prep period.
Notes that never print
Keep accommodation notes, behaviour considerations, or pairing preferences on each student's card. They show in the roster panel for you and never appear on a printout.
Substitute-ready printouts
Clean printable PDFs with student names exactly where they sit — the sub knows the room from the moment they walk in. Sort the roster by last or first name before you print.

Classroom seating chart FAQs
Is this classroom seating chart maker free?
Designing is free with no signup: lay out the room, add students, and rearrange as much as you like. Saving a class, printing the PDF, and reusing your room next period need the Classroom plan, billed per school year or monthly. One plan covers every class you teach.
Is there an editable classroom seating chart template?
Yes. Open Classroom in the designer: set rows and columns with a centre aisle, pods of 4 or 6, a U-shape, or a horseshoe, and the desks are placed for you with the front of the room marked. Every desk can then be moved, added, or deleted, so the template matches your real room.
Can I download a printable classroom seating chart template (PDF)?
Yes. The blank PDF on this page is a free download with no signup: 30 desks in rows with a centre aisle, a front-of-room marker, an empty name box on every desk, and lines for teacher, class period, room, and date. Print it and write names in by hand.
How do I customise a seating chart template for my classroom (rows, groups, U-shape, pods)?
In the designer, open Classroom and pick Rows and columns, Pods, U-shape, or Horseshoe. Set the number of rows and columns, the pod size and number of pods, or the number of desks, choose one or two seats per desk, and turn the centre aisle and front-of-room marker on or off. Then drag desks into place, add a desk for yourself, and import your roster.
Can my school pay for this?
Yes. Pay by card and download the receipt for reimbursement, or ask us about a School plan that covers every teacher in the building. Verified US schools can pay by purchase order, and Title I schools get a reduced rate. District purchasing goes through the School plan too.
Can I import my class roster?
Yes. Paste names from your gradebook or upload a CSV. Each student gets a draggable card you can drop onto a desk, and a tags column in the CSV (reading group, glasses, ELL) is picked up automatically.
Can I make a different chart for each class period?
Yes. Save the room layout once as a template, then create separate charts for each period with different students. Switch between them in seconds.
Can I sort students alphabetically?
Yes. Sort the student list by last name or first name, then drag each student to a desk, or let the shuffle reseat the class while keeping your seating rules.
What goes on the printout for a substitute?
Student names at their desks, with no tags or notes. Both stay in the app, so the PDF you leave in the sub folder never carries accommodation or behaviour information.
Will it work on a school-issued Chromebook?
Yes. SeatPlan.io runs in any modern browser — Chromebook, iPad, Windows, Mac. No software install, no admin approval needed.
What happens to student data?
We never ask for student email addresses, and rosters, tags, and notes are deleted when your plan ends or earlier when you ask. Our Student Data Privacy page sets out the FERPA and COPPA position and the full list of subprocessors.
